This year marks 50 years since NYU’s first graduating class of urban planners was awarded degrees. The Fall 2012 issue of The Wagner Planner commemorates this milestone by exploring the many intersections between planning and public service. Some of the program’s most distinguished alumni over the last decade reflect on the value of a pubic service-minded degree and offer advice from the field. We examine new efforts to preserve Mumbai’s rich heritage amid sharpening pressure to grow, we evaluate a groundbreaking pilot project to reduce carbon emissions in South Africa, and we discuss what makes planning interventions effective in an exclusive interview with the former mayor of Bogota. These stories come alive with stunning original photography from current and former students.
‘Planning + Public Service‘ is a celebration of the 50 years worth of urban planners who have brought innovative and thoughtful solutions to the public realm – and a call to current and future students to identify and advance their own public service mission through planning.
